Yet another national football team has fallen by the wayside and failed to qualify for a FIFA World Cup finals.

This time it is the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s Under-20 team!

So much was expected of the girls but lack of fitness and preparedness showed up in their two matches so far. On Thursday, the girls went down 3-2 to Haiti, and on Saturday night, they suffered a 4-1 loss to powerhouse, Canada. And they are not sure to beat Costa Rica on Monday night.

A hat-trick from Canadian striker Jordyn Huitema and a penalty from Gabby Carle brought an end to this country’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in France later this year.

Huitema who also scored a double in her team’s opening game against Costa Rica at the Ato Boldon Stadium on Thursday, led a commanding 4-1 performance over the national team, which was reduced to 10 players in the 65th minute when captain Natisha John was given marching orders for handling the ball in the box.

The home team which got off to a flying start just as it did in its first game against the Haitians, when striker Aaliyah Prince reacted faster to a right side corner by smashing the ball into the roof of the net to hand the host the lead in only the second minute.

But the Canadians settled quickly and launched a series of attacks on the Trinidad and Tobago goal.

The Canadians got the equalizer in the eight-minute when the goalkeeper failed to hold on to a cross from the right and inside a crowded area, and Huitema fired it into the back of an open goal.

The teams went to the half tied at 1-1. In the 51st minute, Huitema quickly fired in from a loose ball after the local defence found trouble to clear Shaw’s right side corner.

Trouble came when John accidentally handled the ball inside the penalty area in the 65th minute and was shown the red card. The incident resulted in a penalty which Carle scored to make it 3-1.

Huitema then rounded off the scoring when she out sprinted the opposition defence to slide the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to record her hat-trick, and a comfortable 4-1 win for the visitors.

Canada and Haiti have advanced to the semifinals.
