Four men were on their way on Thursday to kill another man. But on their way, they were confronted by the police. A shootout ensued and three of the four were killed. A fourth man is on the run.
The dead men were identified as Kirk Stewart, 17, of Upper La Puerta Road, Joshima Oxley, 24, of Bagatelle, and Akile Mc Gilvery, 25, from Four Roads, Diego Martin.
According to reports, around 11.45 am, Western Division police received a report that a group of men in a silver Nissan B15 were on their way to “put down a hit”.
Within minutes, officers of the Western Division Task Force (WDTF) intercepted the vehicle at Broome Street, La Puerta, Diego Marin.
One of the occupants pointed a firearm towards the police and there was an exchange of gunfire.
All three of the suspects were shot several times. None of the police officers was injured.
Two of the suspects died on the scene, while the third was taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for treatment.
He remained warded under police guard before he succumbed to his injuries while being treated.
Police recovered a Mac 10 sub-machine gun, a Beretta, and a Glock, in the suspects’ vehicle.
The weapons will be taken for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in recent murders or shootings.
Police said two of the suspects were known to them and believe they were operating as members of a gang.
