Upcoming bye-elections …”WOMEN BATTLE FOR GLORY”

Spread the word
The upcoming bye-elections in Local Government will be straight fight among four women – two from the PNM and two from the UNC.

Last Thursday, the PNM announced two women candidates for the vacant seats in Barataria and Belmont.

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley advised President Paula Mae-Weekes that Bye-Elections for the Municipal Electoral Districts of Barataria in the Region of San Juan/Laventille and Belmont East in the Port-of-Spain Corporation will be held on Monday July 16.

These seats became vacant following to the deaths of Councillors Pernell Bruno on July 08, 2017 and Darryl Rajpaul on November 18, 2017.

Rowley also advised the President that Nomination Day will be on June 25, and has requested that the Writs of Elections be issued in accordance with the provisions of Section 29 of the Municipal Corporations Act, Chapter 25:04.

Bruno was instrumental in bringing San Juan Jabloteh back to play at the Barataria Recreation Ground in 2016. He represented Trinidad and Tobago at the CARIFTA and CAC games in athletics.

Belmont East councillor Darryl Rajpaul, 51, collapsed and died of a heart attack during a football match in his community. Rajpaul was in his third term as a Local Government councillor, having been first elected in 2010.

The United National Congress has announced that Sharon Maraj-Dharam will contest the Barataria seat, and Lianna Babb-Gonzales is the candidate for Belmont East.

Elections officer Don Sylvester stated, “We are pleased with the response to our call for nominations for these two seats, which have been without representation at the local level for far too long.

“The UNC welcomes both candidates, who have strong ties with their respective communities, and have been working to promote cultural and sporting activities to assist residents, particularly young people.

“In light of the failure of the Rowley-led PNM to provide for the needs of these communities and indeed across Trinidad and Tobago, the UNC expects that the electors of both seats will demonstrate their support for them in the upcoming poll on Monday July 16th, 2018.”
