Christine Newallo-Hosein, contender for the post of political leader of the United National Congress (UNC), finds it passing strange that the UNC’s Monday Night Forum just woke up to coincide with the announcement that the incumbent political leader was calling an early elections.
In a letter dated November 10 to Dave Tancoo, general secretary of the PNM, Newallo-Hosein said, “it has been noticed by the membership of the United National Congress, its supporters and the general public, that the party suddenly reinstated the weekly Monday Night Forum after a prolonged hiatus.
“The timing of this appears to have coincided with the announcement by Mrs. Kamla Persad Bissessar that she will be stepping down as Political Leader one year earlier than her constitutional mandated term suggested, and this gives the appearance that Mrs. Persad Bissessar is utilizing the political instruments of the party for her own re-election campaign.
“It is therefore imperative that in order to prevent these meetings, the National Executive and the Election committee from being called into disrepute, steps need to be taken to ensure that these meetings are not used for internal propaganda.”
