Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Dr. Roodal Moonilal, Member of Parliament for Oropouche East, have lauded the vast contribution of Premchand “Doc” Sookoo, the longest-serving councillor in the Caribbean.

Persad-Bissessar and Moonilal congratulated Sookoo at a public function last Wednesday, to commemorate the renaming of a public park in honour of the former Local Government representative.

The function was organized by the residents of Ramai trace with the support of the Penal/ Debe Regional Corporation.

The Premchand Sookoo Recreation Ground, at Congo Village, Ramai Trace, Debe, was publicly launched in the midst of celebratory addresses.

Sookoo served as a councillor for 33 years.

They noted that the now-retired councillor was involved in several initiatives that significantly improved the lives of burgesses of Penal-Debe Regional Corporation.

Sookoo said he was humbled by the honour and that his work over the years was a labour of love.

Dr. Allen Sammy, current Chairman of the Corporation, and other public officials and associates of Sookoo also paid tribute to the Local Government stalwart and said he was an exemplar to other representatives.

They observed that he had made an enduring contribution.

During his years of service, Sookoo served for two electoral terms as Chairman of the Corporation.

He retired at the end of the last term in 2016.
