It is not very often that murder cases go the way of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). But on Thursday, the office of the DPP succeeded in getting murder convictions against two men.
Justice Carla Brown-Antoine read the death sentence to Sunil Singh and Baldath Rampersad, after the jury found them guilty as charged.
Singh and Rampersad were charged with the murder of pundit Kamal Harripersad, 54, who was chopped to death at his St John’s Trace, Orange Field Road, home during a robbery on August 3, 2007.
According to the State’s case, Harripersad was at home with his wife and children when two men stormed the house and demanded money before murdering him. Singh and Rampersad were eventually charged for the crime and were committed to stand trial in 2009 following a preliminary inquiry at the Chaguanas Magistrates’ Court.
After the guilty pleas were announced and the men asked by Brown-Antoine if they wished to say anything before sentence was passed, they both maintained that they never committed the crime. The death sentence was then read.
