So far in 2016, the police had been successful in keeping the road fatality figure down. Increased patrols on highways were put into effect.
But on Monday night one of the worst crashes took place on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, O’Meara, Arima, where six persons were killed.
The crash involved a Mitsubishi Lancer car and a Nissan Navarra.
Three people from each vehicle died. Five people died at the scene. The sixth died while undergoing treatment. Police report that two people survived.
The crash happened at the traffic light intersection at around 10.35p.m. Police reported that the driver of the car broke the red light and the car broadsided the pickup van at high speed, sending it tumbling.
Graphic images from the crash scene show the broken bodies of the victims entangled in the wreckage of both vehicles, multiple ambulances, police officers and firefighters, bodies covered with sheets lining the concrete median, and stunned onlookers.
