Soca Warriors make it to final round… Russia here we come

Spread the word

At last! Something to smile about.

With all the crime, drop in the economy, and crime talks which may lead to no where, the Trinidad and Tobago Soca Warriors lifted the spirits of patriotic fans at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday night.

The Warriors drew 2-2 with Guatemala in a CONCACAF Fourth Round World Cup Qualifier to send them to the final round of the FIFA World Cup in Russia 2018.

The Warriors are leading Group C with 11 points, with the final group match to be played next Tuesday at the Everbank Field Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida, against the United States (10 points). The USA beat St Vincent 6-0 on Friday to qualify with the Warriors from Group C.After Friday’s games, the other four qualifiers to the final round are Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. The last time  the Warriors reached the final round was in 2005 when they finished fourth. The Warriors had to beat Bahrain 1-0 in a play off to secure an historic World Cup berth in Germany in 2006.

After Friday’s games, the other four qualifiers to the final round are Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. The last time  the Warriors reached the final round was in 2005 when they finished fourth. The Warriors had to beat Bahrain 1-0 in a play off to secure an historic World Cup berth in Germany in 2006.

Friday was the third time the Warriors had knocked out Guatemala from the World Cup, having done so for the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
Guatemala striker and captain Carlos Luiz scored both goals for his team but Joevin Jones’ double for the Warriors sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy.

TT started off in energetic fashion, with Cordell Cato, in the first minute, between a ball Daneil Cyrus but his shot went over bar.

Guatemala came into their own, with TT goalkeeper Marvin Phllip producing a pair of fine saves to deny Jean Marquez’ free-kick in the 15th, followed by a long blast from Marco Pappa.

Luiz opened the scoring with a long range free kick to put Guatemala ahead in the 37th. He met a low cross from the right by Christian Jimenez and slotted the ball to the right of Phillip.

But Joevin Jones equalised on the stroke of half time finishing off a breakaway move started by TT captain Kenwyne Jones, with a left footed shot through the legs of Guatemala custodian Paulo Moota.

Kevin Molino found Joevin Jones on the left in the 67th minute to put the Warriors ahead 2-1.

Guatemala equalised  in the 86th, but it was not enough to keep them in the World Cup. The Warriors threw away many chances with skipper Kenwyne Jones the main culprit. It was a good result for TTFA President David John-Williams who has been at the help of the association for just 10 months.

USA beat St Vincent 6-0

In the other Group C match, United States teenage substitute Christian Pulisic scored a second-half double in a 6-0 rout of St Vincent and the Grenadines as they moved to the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifying round.

Three first-half goals had put the result beyond doubt. German-based Bobby Wood opened the scoring in the 28th minute when he curled a shot into the far corner from just outside the box at the Arnos Vale cricket ground in Kingstown.

Matt Besler’s strike and a Jozy Altidore penalty extended the lead before halftime. St Vincent had the ball in the net twice early in the second half, but were offside on both occasions. Seventeen-year-old Pulisic then showed his class after coming off the bench.

The Borussia Dortmund striker scored his first goal after collecting a pass with a deft touch inside the box and completed the win in stoppage time when he was given too much time just outside the box and placed the ball clinically inside the post.

Sacha Kljestan also scored for the US, who are poised to reach the so-called Hexagonal of CONCACAF qualifying.
