Omar Samaroo, a soldier in the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment who found slumped in his quarters with a gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday, has died at hospital.
Investigators are now saying that Samaroo committed suicide as he had domestic problems.
One of his colleagues said the incident has come as a shock as Samaroo was not the kind of person to take his life.
“He was always giving advice how to deal with a problem. His military training assisted him in the way he dealt with people. It goes to show when the problem is at your door step, it takes on another appearance.”
Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier was found in a slumped position in his quarters at approximately 9:50 a.m o9n Tuesday. He was treated immediately by medics stationed at the 1st Engineer Battalion, Cumuto.
He was then taken to the Arima Health Facility where he was stabilized and then transferred to Mt Hope.
The Regiment has launched a probe to determine what led to the shooting.
