Prisons officer charged with misbehaviour in public office

A 26 year old prisons officer with four years’ service, has been charged with misbehaviour in public office. He will appear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate on Tuesday.

The charge follows the discovery that keys belonging to the Port of Spain State Prison on Frederick Street had gone missing last Friday.

The discovery triggered a national security alert, with police and soldiers called in the secure the Port of Spain Prison, while investigators worked to find the keys which unlocked every cell in the jail.

The keys were allegedly found at the home of the prisons officer who said he accidentally took them home.

The officer was detained immediately and the keys recovered. The officer has been in police custody since then.

Inspector Desmond Wilson of the Criminal Investigations Department is due to lay the charge.
