“Prisoner escapes from Carrera”

Spread the word

A prisoner jumped into the choppy waters off Carrera Island Prison on Wednesday afternoon and escaped.

Unil Phillip, 45, of Rio Claro, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for possession of a shotgun and six rounds of ammunition in July 2015 and would have been released in January of 2019.

Phillip had a fight with a fellow inmate on Wednesday and was charged with assault. If found guilty of the new charge while incarcerated, he would have had months added on to his sentence.

Phillip reportedly broke free from the clutches of prison officers and ran towards the fencing before climbing and jumping into the waters below. The escape took place shortly after midday.
