A man was murdered in the sleepy north-eastern village of Cumaca on Saturday.
Police said the victim, 27-year-old Jelani John, was standing along the main road in the area near to his home around 2 pm when he was approached by a gunman who shot him five times and then ran off.
John was killed on the spot.
Police said John was not known to be in any criminal activity within the last three years but admitted he had been before the courts previously on a marijuana-possession charge.
His body was moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary and an autopsy is expected to be performed at the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park, on Monday. The murder toll stands at 423.
