A woman remains warded at hospital in a critical condition after her two hands were almost severed in a cutlass attack by her estranged husband during a domestic dispute on New Year’s Day.
The man later drank a weedicide and was found dead near his home.
According to reports around 9 am, Bishnu and Drupatie Sankar had an argument at their home at David Trace, Kelly Village, Caroni.
Bishnu grabbed a cutlass and chopped his wife several times. Two of the blows almost completely severed her hands from her arms. He ran away from their house as his wife screamed for help.
Residents contacted the police who took the injured woman to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope.
She remains warded in a critical condition at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police and residents later found Bishnu lying unconscious in some bushes near to their home. A bottle of a chemical believed to be poison was found near his body.
He was pronounced dead by a District Medical Officer (DMO.)
