Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar claims that truckloads of state-of-the-art medical equipment are being spirited out of the modern Couva Children’s Hospital.
Persad-Bissessar said she plans to write to the Police Commissioner on the matter.
She asked whether the equipment is being moved for the authorities to claim that the hospital is not suitably outfitted.
She said the hospital had been stocked with all the relevant updated equipment.
She stated that she would continue to press for opening of the health facility.
The hospital, built at a cost of $1.5 billion, has not been put to use because the government says there are insufficient available medical personnel.
Speaking at a public meeting of her United National Congress at Tableland, Persad-Bissessar questioned whether all government ministers are now receiving police escorts.
She said that that was not the practice of the government she led.
She also knocked the government on the crime scourge and presented some suggestions for dealing with the crisis.
She criticised the Dr. Keith Rowley administration, claiming that it had failed to deliver on 10 promises that had been identified for urgent action.
Several of those pledges dealt with crime.
