A domestic dispute turned deadly on Tuesday evening when a soldier shot at his brother-in-law who intervened in the disturbance.
The brother-in-law was shot and wounded. But the soldier’s daughter, 2, who was in her uncle’s arms, fell and hit her head and died sometime later at hospital.
The drama unfolded when the soldier turned up at the home of his girlfriend at Paul Street, Sangre Grande. Within minutes, a dispute arose when he was not allowed to see his daughter. The argument got out of control so the girlfriend’s brother intervened while holding the soldier’s daughter.
The soldier got angry and whipped out a revolver and fired at his brother-in-law. The brother-in-law was shot and in the process dropped his niece. The girl hit her head on the ground. It was not determined if the girl was also shot.
The soldier, who was dressed in full camouflage uniform, escaped in his car, but was arrested by police in Valencia and the firearm seized. Both the brother–in-law and girl were rushed to the Sangre Grande District Hospital where the girl died while undergoing emergency surgery.
The soldier was taken the Sangre Grande Police Station where he was being questioned. His seniors in the Regiment were informed about the arrest.
Police reported that the soldier had a domestic matter at the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court.
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to be performed on Wednesday at the Forensic Sciences Center, Federation Park.
