A man was killed by police in Rio Claro on Thursday night.
Junior Paul Smith, 43, of Piparo Road, was shot four times.
According to reports, around 7.30 p.m on Thursday, officers of the Rio Claro CID and Eastern Division Task Force were conducting a roadblock exercise at Tabaquite Road.
Police said an AD wagon with two occupants opened fire at police officers as the vehicle sped through the roadblock.
Officers pursued the vehicle for approximately half-mile before the vehicle was intercepted.
Police said upon exiting the vehicle the occupants shot at them, then they ran into a teak field where they escaped.
The police team conducted searches in the area but the suspects were not found.
Shortly after midnight, police attempted to stop another vehicle with only a driver near where the initial roadblock was set up.
Upon seeing the officers, the driver sped into a dirt track off the road.
Police again pursued the vehicle.
Officers said the driver stopped and came out of the vehicle shooting at them.
They returned fire and the suspect collapsed and was detained.
Police said they seized a .38 special revolver that was in Smith’s possession.
Smith was taken to Rio Claro District Health Facility where he died while undergoing treatment.
