Bandits terrorize, attack worshippers …”MANDIR ROBBED”

Is there a plan by criminal elements to target Hindu places of worship?

It seems that bandits from North Trinidad have targeted these places of worship to carry out a sustained attack and to reap rewards.

The latest is the attack at the Radha Gopinath Mandir, Longdenville, where worshippers were terrorized and attacked on Monday morning.

It was the second Hindu temple to be robbed in the past month.

Police said three masked men entered the Radha Gopinath Mandir, Edinburgh Road, at around 2 a.m. The men, armed with guns and cutlasses,  broke through the door leading to the ashram. A female devotee was tied up and beaten with a gun.

The men then ransacked the temple and took the donation box containing cash.

They escaped through the prayer room. Police said other valuables were reported missing. Central division police visited the scene and are continuing investigations.

Pundit Satyanand Maharaj, of the Satya Anand Ashram, Temple of Peace and Bliss,
Aranguez said, “It is sad that following a press conference on Sunday to highlight the increasing attacks on religious institutions that are unprotected by the police service. another attack has happened mere hours after the press conference.

“The Londonville Radha Gopnath Mandir was robbed by cutlass wielding bandits in the wee hours of Monday morning.

“It appears that the criminal elements view religious intuitions as soft targets. This coupled with fact that the police appears to be impotent to deal with increasing criminality augments the vulnerability of religious institutions.

“The Rowley administration appears to have surrendered with Minister Edmund Dillon offering no solutions but excuses on a consistent basis. We are fed-up of the government’s inability to deal with crime. Is it that places of worship have to consider investing in CCTV cameras and armed security to protect its flock?

“It is ironic that police officers can be found to raid mosques but not to protect Mandirs. Failure by the Rowley administration to deal with crime will only result in increased vigilantism and an increase in crime.”
