A bandit was shot and killed by police after he was cornered by police in El Carmen, St Helena, on Thursday.
The dead bandit was identified as Gimmel “Boyo” Gordon, 23, of Enterprise, Chaguanas, who had 21 matters pending before the courts for offences such sexual offences, robbery and possession of narcotics.
It was shortly after 10 am on Thursday when two men robbed K&G mini mart. The bandits were surprised when they saw a police vehicle parked nearby.
One of the bandits who emerged from the mini mart first looked in the direction of the police and fired at the two officers before running away.
Residents said the owner of the minimart, Gita Harnarain, screamed at the officers for help.
The two officers froze, prompting the villagers into action.
It was only then that one of the two officers joined the chase.
The second bandit emerged from the mini mart and began shooting at the villagers who were chasing his partner.
He also shot at the police officer who was seated in the driver’s seat of the police vehicle running away.
Several police vehicles joined the search for the two bandits. One of them was later cornered in a dead-end street and killed by officers of the Central Division Task Force during a shootout.
The shootout took place a short distance from the mini mart. Police said they know who the second bandit is.
One eyewitness said he was in the mini mart when one gunman came in and held up the owner.
The owner placed cash, cigarettes and cellphones in a bag.
The other bandit went to the back of the business and tied up the woman’s husband, son and a female worker. That bandit said that they were going to kidnap her son and the female employee and called for their getaway driver to come closer.
The bandits came in a Nissan B-15 driven by another man who fled when the police approached. Police said all the suspects are from Enterprise.
