It can only be described as a hit with a vengeance. For two gunmen to empty 60 rounds of ammunition on a defenseless couple, could mean only one thing – an assassination.
These two murders have rocked the Marabella area again, bringing to four killed this week alone.
The dead were identified as Chinese nationals, Shi Rui Zhao, and Yangli Gu.
The couple had just left a casino at Tarouba Road, Marabella, which Shi operated, and were returning to their rented apartment at New Haven Avenue, Marabella.
Police said two security guards from the casino were driving in another vehicle behind Zhao’s black Toyota Atlis car.
Both vehicles pulled into a car park at Kosume Bar, where the two gunmen were waiting.
The couple lived on the top floor of the building housing the restaurant. The building has an apartment complex where several Chinese nationals are tenants.
Zhao, 32, and Gu, 30, were still inside the vehicle when two men opened fire on them.
The security guards who were seated in the vehicle parked next to the couple drove off.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stood on both sides of the vehicles and fired several shots hitting the couple multiple times on the head and body.
The windows and doors of the car were filled with bullet holes.
Police found both dead. Zhao was slumped over Gu.
Investigators said the Chinese nationals were the targets, and it was not a random crime or robbery attempt.
The gunmen escaped in a waiting car.
Police plan to interrogate the two guards to determine if they were a link to the killings. The bodies were taken to the Forensic Sciences Center, Federation Park, for autopsies on Friday.
Investigators are searching for relatives of the dead couple.
Police were told that both Zhao and Gu came to Trinidad several years ago to find a better life. Like hundreds of Chinese nationals in this country, they began a business, and according to the police, the way they were killed, meant that something had gone wrong for them to meet such a gruesome death.
