Coast Guard officer arrested five men in Icacos on Sunday night for alleged trafficking of $1.5 million in marjuana.
The suspects were detained by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) during an exercise in the Gulf of Paria.
The suspects were turned over to the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB).
A release from the TTCG stated: “On Sunday 10th April 2016 while on routine patrol along the south coast TTS SPEYSIDE – CG 25 intercepted a pirogue with crocos bags and five (5) men onboard. The vessel and its occupants were escorted to the Coast Guard’s Cedros Base where seven crocus bags containing 280 packets of marijuana, weighting a total of 148.75 kilograms, with an estimated street value of $ 1.5 million were recovered from the pirogue.
The men and narcotics were handed over to the Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB) for further processing”.
